Installing OpenAI Codex

Step-by-step instructions for installing the OpenAI Codex desktop app on Mac and Windows.

OpenAI Codex is an AI coding assistant that runs directly on your computer. This guide walks you through downloading the app, installing it, and signing in for the first time.

Mac

Step 1: Download and install Codex

  1. Go to openai.com/codex and click Download for macOS
  2. Once downloaded, open your Downloads folder and double-click the .dmg file
  3. A new window will open showing the Codex icon and an Applications folder
  4. Click and drag the Codex icon onto the Applications folder icon
  5. Wait for the copy to finish, then close the window

Step 2: Open Codex for the first time

  1. Open Finder, click Applications on the left, and find Codex
  2. Double-click Codex to open it

Note: You may see a message saying “Codex can’t be opened because it’s from an unidentified developer.” To get past it:

  1. Click Done to dismiss the warning
  2. Open System SettingsPrivacy & Security
  3. Scroll down and click Open Anyway next to the Codex message
  4. Enter your Mac password if prompted

Step 3: Sign in

Sign in using your OpenAI account email and password.


Windows

Step 1: Install Codex from the Microsoft Store

  1. Press the Start button (Windows logo in the bottom-left corner) and search for Microsoft Store
  2. Open the Microsoft Store app
  3. In the search bar at the top, type Codex and press Enter
  4. Click on the Codex result published by OpenAI
  5. Click Get or Install and wait for the download to complete

Step 2: Open Codex

  1. Press the Start button and search for Codex
  2. Click Codex to open it

Step 3: Sign in

Sign in using your OpenAI account email and password.
